Rick Plumridge taking photos out in the fieldRick Plumridge

I was born in Melbourne, Australia and had lots of interests to keep me entertained as I grew up. At 14, my father showed me how to use his 35mm SLR camera and from there I was hooked. After graduating from art school, I set off overseas with my backpack and camera to photograph the North American forests. Immersed in such a beautiful environment, I began to really understand the magnificence all around me. I now had an appreciation for nature that I'd never had before and to capture this on film became my passion.

While digital photography is the norm these days and can achieve some extraordinary results, for me there is a warmth and quality that only film can provide. To truly capture an amazing sunrise, your senses need to be tuned into the environment to be totally present to achieve the correct exposure. This is my favourite part and something that digital cameras remove from the process as you can just take another shot. While I do really value using my digital camera, I intend to keep using film for my landscape shots until the last lab closes its doors.

Apart from me totally enjoying what's involved in photography, I guess my mission is to remind people how beautiful and healing nature can be amongst the busy lives most of us lead. Although there is no real substitute for actually being there, a large, well-framed print comes a pretty close second.
